Platelet Therapy for Hair Loss:
What it does and who it helps
Platelet therapy for hair loss offers a natural, medically guided way to support thinning hair. It can help suitable patients strengthen existing hair, improve hair quality, and enhance recovery after a hair transplant.
What is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. It uses a concentrated part of your own blood, which contains growth factors involved in healing and tissue repair.
During treatment, we prepare the plasma carefully before placing it into targeted areas of the scalp. This makes platelet treatment for hair loss a natural option because it uses your own biology.
How does plasma for hair loss work?
Plasma for hair loss aims to support weaker hair follicles and improve the scalp environment. The growth factors in PRP can help stimulate follicle activity, improve hair thickness, and support healthier growth cycles.
However, results vary between patients. Therefore, we assess your hair loss pattern, scalp health, and treatment goals before recommending it.
Who is platelet treatment for hair loss recommended for?
Platelet treatment for hair loss often suits patients with early thinning, reduced hair density. It may also help people who want a regenerative option without committing to long-term medication.
PRP can also support patients who already use treatments such as minoxidil or finasteride, or Low Level Light Therapy. It can form part of a broader, tailored hair restoration plan.
In addition, it can also form part of hair transplant treatment by helping with healing, reduce shedding and promoting early growth after the procedure. More about the hair transplant growth phase.

The benefits of PRP platelet rich plasma for hair loss
What can PRP achieve?
-
Improve hair density in suitable patientsStudies show PRP can increase the number of hairs in treated areas, especially in androgenetic alopecia.
-
Help strengthen existing miniaturised hairsPRP does not create new follicles. Instead, it supports weaker follicles that still remain active.
-
Reduce shedding in some patientsBy improving the follicle environment, PRP may help more hairs stay in the growth phase for longer.
-
Improve hair quality, thickness, and scalp healthSome patients notice stronger, healthier-looking hair before major density changes appear.
-
Suits early to moderate hair thinning bestPRP usually works better when patients still have visible hair in the thinning area.
-
It offers a drug-free regenerative optionThis can appeal to patients who cannot take, or prefer to avoid, long-term medication.
How can PRP help hair transplant patients?
-
PRP may support graft recovery after surgeryPlatelets release growth factors involved in healing, repair, and early tissue recovery.
-
Help transplanted hairs enter growth earlierSome studies suggest PRP can reduce early shedding and support faster visible growth.
-
Improve graft survival in selected patientsResearch has reported better density and follicle survival when PRP supports hair transplantation.
-
Support healing in the recipient areaPRP may help calm inflammation, improve recovery, and support the scalp after implantation.
-
Strengthen surrounding native hairThis matters because transplant results depend on both transplanted grafts and existing hair. PRP may help protect non-transplanted hair from ongoing thinning after surgery.
What the research data says...
A 2020 systematic review found that 84% of included studies reported a positive PRP effect, while 50% showed statistically significant improvement using objective measures. [Gentile and Garcovich, 2020]
For women with hair loss, a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis included 21 studies and 628 participants. It found significant improvements in hair density and thickness, with a generally favourable safety profile. [Yuan et al., 2024]
A 2025 systematic review found that PRP used alongside hair transplantation was associated with improved hair density, better follicle survival, and earlier hair growth. [Sindhusen et al., 2025]
One prospective randomised FUE hair transplant study reported that all patients in the PRP group achieved more than 75% hair regrowth at 6 months. In comparison, only four patients in the non-PRP group reached the same level. [Garg, 2016]
Overall, research suggests PRP may help suitable patients improve hair density, hair thickness, graft survival, and early growth. However, treatment quality, patient selection, and PRP preparation methods remain important. [Gentile and Garcovich, 2020; Yuan et al., 2024; Sindhusen et al., 2025]

Doctor-led PRP hair loss treatment
Doctor-led PRP maximises results while minimising risks. A doctor can assess your hair loss pattern, review health factors, and identify when other tests or treatments may be needed. Therefore, plasma therapy for hair loss becomes part of a safer, more complete plan, rather than a standalone procedure.
