The
Surgery Day

FUE hair transplant procedure step by step:
On the day of surgery

You’ll be welcomed on arrival, complete the final forms, and get settled before surgery begins. Dr Thomas will agree the personalised design with you before the procedure starts. The surgery begins. Finally, a debrief at the end to go over your recovery and aftercare instructions. The day will typically last 6-8 hours depending on the size of your hair transplant.

Marking the beginning of your new look
  • Arrival
When you arrive, the team will welcome you and help you settle in. You’ll complete the consent form, store any personal items, and get changed into a gown. You can bring headphones or your own music if you like.
  • The Design Plan
The process begins with Dr Thomas finalising your personalised design. Together, you will discuss suitable levels and shapes of a new hairline, agree on your priority areas, and the options for shaving. Above all, you will have time to consider every detail, and opportunities to see all the marked areas and design before proceeding.
Getting settled and helping you relax
  • Welcoming environment
You will be welcomed by the surgical team into a calm, relaxed environment. Throughout the day, you can listen to music or chat with the team if you wish. If appropriate, we may offer a mild sedative to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed during the procedure.
  • Shaving the head
Next, we will prepare your scalp for surgery. This usually includes shaving the treatment area, which we understand can be one of the more challenging parts of the process for many patients. However, depending on your hair characteristics and treatment plan, part-shaven or unshaven options may be available.
  • Taking a break
Throughout the day, we encourage you to ask questions at any stage. We will also schedule regular breaks, including time to enjoy lunch, so you remain as comfortable as possible from start to finish.
Starting the procedure
  • The Surgery
Before we begin, we will review your medical details and complete final safety checks, including recording your blood pressure. Your scalp will then be cleansed and prepared for the procedure. The hair transplant is performed under local anaesthetic, so once your scalp is numb, you may just feel pressure and movement but not pain. The numbing injections are usually the most uncomfortable part of the day. However, we administer them slowly, at your pace, and use a range of techniques to make them as comfortable as possible.
  • Completion
Once the transplant is complete, you’ll have time to rest and recover before a final check with Dr Thomas. After that, we will talk through the aftercare instructions, and provide you with a take-home care pack to support your healing and new growth in the days ahead.
